Described by William Wordsworth as the “venturous harbinger of spring”, snowdrops emerge in late January and February to remind us that though the days may still be cold and the nights dark, warmer and brighter times are not far away.
Hibernating in Staxton Vale’s luxury lodges this winter and seeking some fresh air? Here’s where to walk among snowdrops in the Scarborough area.
Near the centre of Scarborough, with entrances off Oak Road and Springhill Road, Falsgrave Park is a green oasis among the handsome Victorian houses that surround it. Gifted as a public pleasure garden at the end of the 19th century, the middle section of the park offers woodland walks with wildflower meadows above. Snowdrops greet visitors in later winter and early spring with daffodil displays following in March.
Burton Agnes Hall
A half-hour drive from Staxton Vale, the grounds of Burton Agnes Hall burst into carpets of white for just a few short weeks in February. The Elizabethan stately home and its gardens, shop and cafe are closed in January but once they reopen, you can take a woodland walk before a bite to eat, a tour of the house and even buy some snowdrops of your own to brighten up the exterior of your Scarborough holiday home.
Filey Dams Nature Reserve
A few miles along the road from Staxton to Filey, this nature reserve managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has woodland trails to follow fringed by snowdrops before reaching the boardwalk route around the freshwater lagoons. Look out for various species of duck, geese, teal, wigeon and sparrowhawks, thrushes and finches on the various feeding stations along the way.
Sitting a short way along the A170 that links Scarborough to Pickering in the Dawnay Estate is the village of Wykeham, from where you can pick up the track into Wykeham Forest. Snowdrops bloom on the forest floor in late winter and there’s an interesting 18th-century ice house and Bronze Age barrows to see along the walking trails that lead through the trees. Morning coffee to perk you up ahead of a stroll or afternoon tea to finish await you at the Downe Arms Hotel in Wykeham.
