The UK has many fine places to live and visit but historic Scarborough in Yorkshire takes some beating. It was England’s first-ever seaside resort, having been founded in the 17th century. Since then, the town has gone onto be known around the UK for its warm welcome and enchanting sea views. In addition, there is plenty to see and do in this part of Yorkshire. Scarborough is also a great place to live or visit all-year-round. Autumn for example still sees lots to stay entertained with here.

But what are the best things to do here at this time of year?

Visit the castle

While autumn weather may see days spent on the beach off the agenda, a visit to imposing Scarborough Castle is certainly not. This was built by King Henry II originally and makes a great day out for the whole family. Sitting high above the town between North and South Bays, it has a real air of authority despite being ruined. From checking out the hearth in the Great Hall to gazing at the 26-metre keep, this superb attraction is fascinating.

Explore the Spa

If you need something to do in Scarborough over autumn, why not fit in a trip to the town’s fabulous spa? It is found in South Bay and dates back to the 19th century. The spa is also located close to the site of the natural springs which Scarborough is famous for. Despite the name, this is actually a series of performance venues which are combined into one large complex. It includes a Grand Hall which hosts music events, a Victorian theatre and the neoclassical Sun Court. Even if no events are taking place, this complex is still worth a stroll around.

Discover the Rotunda Museum

This is a perfect autumn activity as you are safely inside if it rains! Built in 1829, this was the first purpose-built museum in the country. It was the brainchild of the famous geologist William Smith. As a result, it is packed full of over 5,000 fossils and more than 3,000 minerals. Kids will love the many fun exhibits here too – from mammoth teeth to fossilised plants from the Jurassic era.
